Engineering Program/Project Lead

A Project Lead in the International Nuclear Security Engineering department at Sandia National Laboratories, Anthony (Tony) Aragon has more than 30 years of experience in the area of physical protection of special nuclear material (SNM) during use, storage, and transport. Tony currently conducts physical protection assessments of nuclear facilities in foreign countries and provides training in physical protection to international customers for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).

Tony supports the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) with International Physical Protection Advisory Service (IPPAS) missions, consultancy meetings and delivering IAEA training in various partner countries. He is experienced with data gathering during site visits, facility characterization, target consequence analysis, vulnerability analysis and performance testing of existing physical protection systems. Tony has used the Design Evaluation Process Outline methodology, combat simulation tools, table-top exercises and other types of performance testing for the determination of physical protection system effectiveness of high consequence facilities. 

Previously, Tony managed the Physical Security and Nuclear Material Control and Accountability department, which was responsible for the implementation of programs to protect SNM, classified matter, property, and personnel in compliance with DOE security requirements. 

Throughout his career, Tony has focused on conducting and managing advanced vulnerability analyses requiring the combined efforts of multidisciplinary teams of engineers and physical protection experts.
