The Design Evaluation and Process Outline (DEPO) course is a 5-day interactive workshop that provides participants with an understanding of the Sandia-developed DEPO methodology used to define, design, and evaluate physical protection systems (PPS) for nuclear, radiological, and/or border facilities. This methodology integrates multiple, complex technological and training components to create a holistic approach to physical protection systems. Participants, through instructor-led discussions and hands-on field work, should expect to gain an understanding of the following elements of the DEPO process:

  • Principles of a PPS and its function
  • Definition of PPS objectives
  • Design and Characterization of a PPS
  • PPS Evaluation

Confirmation of Attendance

  • The class is limited to 25 people. You will be notified within the next two weeks if you are a confirmed participant for this course. If you are not confirmed, you will be placed on a wait list for the next class.

Expectations

  • Attendance: Participants are expected to attend all five (5) days of the course and be present throughout the entirety of the scheduled day, with no absences or intervening work calls/commitments.
  • Cost and time charging: There is no cost for this class, but you should speak with your manager in advance to provide you with a P/T for your time and travel (if necessary).
  • Technology: Participants are not required to bring laptops or computing devices. All course reading materials and workbooks will be provided on the first day of class. Course field locations prohibit laptops, smartphones, smart watches, and other wireless devices. You may be asked to power off a laptop if it is being used for work rather than course-related reasons.
  • Attire and personal items: This course includes both classroom and field work. Business casual attire is appropriate for classroom days; long pants (jeans are fine) and closed-toe shoes are required for field work. It is highly recommended that you bring a water bottle (there will be places to refill), sunscreen, and a hat, as field work is outside in unshaded areas.
  • Lunch: Lunch is not provided. There are refrigerators and a small break room available for you to use. Lunch breaks are typically one hour or less (depending on course progression). Do not plan on having enough time to commute from the classroom to TA-1 or off-base for lunch.

Adherence to these expectations is required to receive your Certificate of Completion at the end of the course; non-compliance may result in a notification to management. Please reach out to Emily Sandt at esandt@sandia.gov if you have any concerns.
