Nuclear Reactor Engineer and Operator

Nuclear Engineer Lonnie Martin has worked at Sandia National Laboratories for 30 years, primarily as a reactor operator or supervisor for one of Sandia’s research reactors.

Prior to working at Sandia, Lonnie worked at the nuclear research reactors at Los Alamos National Labs (both Omega West and Pajarito sites) and was a certified engineering plant operator and radiation chemist in the U.S. Navy nuclear submarine program. He is a long-time member of the Professional Reactor Operators Society, the Test, Research, and Training Reactors working group, American Nuclear Society, and is a neutron radiography subcommittee member for the American Standards for Testing and Materials organization.

Some of Lonnie's career highlights include designing and operating thousands of reactors, implementing numerous reactor facility upgrades, coordinating emergency response in Sandia's Technical Area V, and training and certification of new reactor operators.

Lonnie received his bachelor's degree in Nuclear Engineering from the University of New Mexico. He is also a licensed professional nuclear engineer in the State of New Mexico and certified with the National Registry of Radiological Protection Technologists.
